Purpose: The study was to evaluate the effects of a self-esteem enhancement parent education program on self-esteem, parent-child communication, and parenting attitude for mothers with children in elementary school.
Methods: The program was developed on the basis of the systematic training for effective parenting(STEP) program and Reasoner¡¯s building self-esteem program. A randomized controlled pre-post test design was used. The subjects were 58 mothers(28 in the experimental group and 30 in the control group) with children in an elementary school in K-gu, Seoul. The program consisted of 6 sessions implemented for 6 weeks. Pre-post tests were performed using the self-esteem scale, parent-adolescent communication inventory, and parenting attitude scale.
Results: The scores of mother¡¯s self-esteem, parent-child communication, and parenting attitudes increased significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group.
Conclusion: This study showed that this program is an effective program for improving mothers¡¯ self-esteem, parent-adolescent communication, and parenting attitude. Therefore, it is suggested that this program could be used as an effective community based nursing intervention for mothers with children in elementary school.
